Project description

The RELAR project represents an initiative focused on supporting earthquake-affected communities through artificial intelligence (AI), bringing together researchers in earthquake engineering, machine learning, project management, and data analysis and visualization.

The RELAR project focuses on developing a universal system for rapid earthquake loss assessment based on machine learning techniques and image recognition. The project aims to generate earthquake damages based on photos, estimate total costs, and present a schedule with resources needed to recover earthquake-affected areas.

Through the development of RELAR, the project will contribute to increased safety, reduced costs associated with recovery, and support the sustainable recovery of earthquake-affected communities.

RELAR aims to automate and improve damage assessment accuracy, thereby efficiently managing the recovery processes of earthquake-affected areas.

Project mission

The mission of the RELAR project is to support earthquake-affected communities in quickly and accurately assessing damage and scheduling and executing recovery processes through the innovative application of machine learning technologies and data analysis.

RELAR aims to reduce earthquakes’ economic and social impact on the population and the community by encouraging collaboration among researchers from different disciplines.

Project goals

The RELAR project has set the following goals:

Goal 1

Automation of damage classification and quantification: Developing and implementing machine learning-based models that can automatically classify and quantify earthquakes' damage, improving the speed and accuracy of assessments.

Goal 2

Recovery planning: Creating a comprehensive 3D matrix of costs and work schedules, enabling accurate planning and management of post-earthquake rehabilitation processes.

Goal 3

Dissemination and exploitation: Ensuring broad dissemination of project results to stakeholders, including decision-makers and the scientific and professional community, encouraging the exploitation of results through workshops, training, and materials.

Goal 4

Data collection and preparation: Collecting and processing data from three earthquakes (Kraljevo, Zagreb, Petrinja), forming data sets for model development and training.
